Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, but then he to later acknowledge that the management had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.

Matteo's Surprising Return

At least one man kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He signed initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
