Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for greater transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their identities obscured.
But some do not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled certain conservative voices to launch the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for action that preceded the congressional vote to pass a law mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that included no previously unseen data.
