A Paris court has found guilty ten people for carrying out the online harassment of Brigitte Macron, the partner of France's leader, Emmanuel Macron.
The those on trial faced allegations of spreading false claims regarding her sex and sexual orientation, in addition to publishing defamatory statements about the pair's significant age difference.
The court issued suspended prison sentences of as much as eight months to the convicted individuals. The detailed judgment has yet to be released.
A longstanding unfounded claim suggesting that Brigitte Macron is a person assigned male at birth has been in circulation since her husband's initial election in 2017.
This recent ruling in France is concurrent with the Macrons engaging in a legal action for defamation in the United States against political commentator Candace Owens, who has repeatedly shared comparable unfounded claims about the French president's wife's identity.
Their complaint alleges that Owens ignored all credible evidence contradicting her allegations in favour of platforming known conspiracy theorists.
Owens has frequently reiterated these claims on her podcast and social media channels, and in March 2024 declared that she would risk all her credibility on her insistence that Mrs. Macron was born a man.
Brigitte Macron originally became acquainted with her current spouse when she was a teacher at his secondary school.
The couple entered into matrimony in 2007, when the then-29-year-old Emmanuel Macron was 29 and she was 54.
